Rocket City Re-decorating Resources

The Christmas and New Year holidays are finally behind us, and hopefully you have been able to get all your holiday décor packed back up and stowed away in the basement or attic.  For many, this leaves your home feeling a little empty or drab.  The New Year is the perfect time to give your home some attention and spruce up your décor.

Your home is your living space and should be decorated to your unique style. My home is extremely unique since it

is made from 1800s logs from TN and re-constructed in Madison County, AL in the 1970s. Rocket City is very lucky to have a plethora of unique shops that can help you furnish your home with distinctive décor that will be aesthetically pleasing while showing characteristics of your personal style.

While Rocket City has many of the national chain stores such as Kirkland’s, Pier One, and Hobby Lobby, the local businesses out shine these big box stores when it comes to one of a kind pieces for your home.  Some of my favorite places to find home décor are local vendor marketplaces that house booths full of local artisans and craftsmen.   Here are a few of my favorite places to find home furnishings in Rocket City.

Firehouse Antiques is located at 10095 Memorial Pkwy SW in Huntsville.  Firehouse Antiques is one of the largest antique malls in the TN Valley.

They have all types of furniture, antiques, and décor. There are unique finds for lots of styles and items to fit any budget.  Firehouse is a unique place that you should definitely checkout, but be aware they are closed on Tuesdays, but make up for it by having hours on Sunday afternoon.

University Pickers is another marketplace that is located at 3024 University Dr NW in Huntsville. University Pickers is often described as a place where “Pinterest has come alive”.   The location is bursting with booths full of creative items.  University Pickers boasts that it hosts over 115 vendors, including a boutique and a café!  It’s definitely a place that any creative will be sure to get lost in for hours!

Funky Monkey Vintage Market is one of my new

favorite places for unique home décor. If you have an older antique home like mine, you will love this eclectic collection of booth and décor.  I found the Funky Monkey last summer when I needed more Dixie Belle Paint for one of my projects.  Funky Monkey has a great collections of booth and one of the largest selections of brands of chalk paint in Madison County.  In addition to their wide selection, they also have a large selection of outdoor metal décor and succulents.

Southeastern Salvage Home Emporium located on Jordan Lane is another unique place to find home furnishings.  They boast that you can shop the world with one step because their buyers travel the world so you don’t have to. The store has a large selection of unique lighting fixtures, cabinets, and flooring.  If you are a Do it yourselfer

looking for unique materials for your next project Southeastern Salvage should definitely be on your shopping route. They also carry a large selection of furniture, rugs, outdoor furniture and décor.

These are just a few of the best places to shop for unique and cost effective furniture and home décor in Rocket City. Have fun shopping these locations and decorating your home!

Decluttering and Consignment Stores in Huntsville

Letting go of things can be tough. I know there’s the book about “Does it bring you joy?”, but I tend to ask, is it particularly beautiful, particularly useful, or both? If it’s none of those, it’s gotta go.

Spring is a prime time to start thinking about clearing out things that are no longer

particularly beautiful or useful in your home... but perhaps might spark joy in someone else's home? It is also great to make a little cash on the things you let go. Spring is around the corner and it’ll soon be time to open windows, air out the house, and maybe toss or sell a few things that are only collecting dust and creating work for you anyway.

My wife and I have recently used the Facebook “marketplace” to great effect to sell a dog kennel, set of chairs, floor lamp, and a bike among, other things. Of course there’s always Craigslist,

though remember to proceed with caution there, as it’s more difficult to sniff out scams.

There’s a newer app for selling unwanted items called LetGo. I’ve used it myself to sell a washer and dryer. It’s simple enough and pretty user friendly, though it’s tough to beat Facebook for transparency in selling things online, since nearly everyone uses it.

If you need to unload some duds you can’t rock anymore, there are countless consignment shops and thrift stores in the Rocket City, some specializing in women’s clothing, accessories, vintage and children’s wear, home decor. Plato’s Closet, Act II Consignment, Play It Again, Klassy Kids, and Encore Furniture and Decor are just a few places you can offload unwanted clothes and furniture.

Just make sure to check out the style of the shop before taking in a box full of threads. It pays to be mindful of the usual inventory of any given store to maximize your profit. Put another way, I’ve been to a Buffalo Exchange (not currently in Huntsville) with a female friend who came away with mildly hurt feelings after an employee turned down most of the items she brought to sell.

So, save your ego and your time, and do a little research beforehand, then get to gettin’ rid of some stuff!

Spark Your Child’s Imagination at The Spark!Lab

The citizens of Huntsville, especially people with children, are extremely fortunate to have the Space and Rocket Center. They consistently incorporate world-renowned exhibits and activities from museums and other institutions into their facilities. This allows children and families in the Rocket City opportunities that are more or less exclusive (in regards to their frequency and overall consistency) to Huntsville. It’s quite a feat to successfully merge fun and educational experiences, and that is something that the USSRC does very well. Spark!Lab is a perfect example.

What is the Spark!Lab?

Created by the Smithsonian Institution’s Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation, Spark!Lab is where technology, engineering, and fun become one; the Spark!Lab offers kids and families the opportunity to test out their mechanical and problem solving skills to create designs to solve real-world from ocean pollution to creating flying machines. This not only has the potential to put the STEM bug in a child’s brain, but is also a gentle and accessible way of introducing them to some of the issues the world is currently facing that their generation will be tasked with solving. With Huntsville’s growth as a technology city it is likely that the solutions to these issues will come from these future tech-leaders.

Activities

At Spark!Lab the activities are broken down into sections. Each section has multiple activities that play to a wide range of interests. Click on each activity type to see a .PDF file with details of each activity.

Topgolf Adds to Rocket City Sports-Leisure Fun Spots

Dallas based Global sports entertainment company TopGolf now has a location in Huntsville, at the site of the old Madison Square Mall. Hit balls at a climate-controlled driving range, catch the big game, and enjoy food and drink at the new Rocket City outpost of the London-born chain, which operates 44 venues in the United States and United Kingdom (including another in Birmingham).

There are 72 hitting bays, event and meeting spaces available, full service restaurant and bars, free WiFi, hundreds of HDTVs, and a firepit (always a magnet for me). TopGolf

offers competitive league and training programs for kids and adults.

TopGolf U Classes are available for groups of up to six. They’re taught by certified instructors and available as single classes ($29) or in five-packs for $125, a $20 savings. Parties and events for fundraisers, kids. companies, and small or large groups are available. Book online or request info at topgolf.com/us/plan-an-event.

For the peckish, an ample menu awaits in the restaurant. Choose from coffee, beer, wine, liquor,

and specialty cocktails and a hearty selection of bar foods like quesadillas, flatbreads, and sliders.

There are salads and other sandwiches on offer, as well as what appears to be their signature dish, “Mushi (Only at TopGolf!)”: cilantro sticky rice, drunken beans, spiced chicken, cheddar cheese, jalapeno tortilla, sour cream, avocado, and Sriracha.

If golf’s your game and you’ve got a little cabin fever, head out to TopGolf Huntsville and try out this exciting new Rocket City attraction.

The HUNKS Are in it for The Long Haul

In my experience there is no event more frustrating, energy-sapping, and just plain unpleasant than moving from one living space to another. When I first moved out of my parents house I took EVERYTHING that I have ever owned. The next time I took mostly what I needed, but plenty of superfluous items.

The last time I moved I got rid of everything that I couldn’t take in one trip… In (nearly immediate) hindsight that was not a great plan. It took almost a year to fill the space out in the new apartment. Huntsville being one of the fastest growing cities in the country has people steadily migrating into this unique little slice of the South.

For anyone thinking of moving to the Rocket City but dreading the move, College Hunks Hauling Junk are a highly rated and

respected moving service that can make the experience less miserable if not enjoyable.

What’s With the Name?! Well, it’s actually a pretty clever acronym

Honest
Uniformed
Nice
Knowledgeable
Service

The company is “the national leader in moving labor and hourly labor services.” They ensure every employee is fully trained and capable of providing the highest level of service before they send them out on any job. Whether it is junk removal, a full-service move, or just a little help with a cumbersome piece of furniture the HUNKS can help.

Services

Junk Removal

If you have some stuff laying around the house or some furniture that you just really don’t need anymore the College HUNKS will come come out and remove those items. They list everything form electronic appliances to mattress disposal on their website. Another awesome service they offer is the “Dumpster Rental Alternative”. This is an alternative to renting one of those eyesore dumpsters to sit in front of your house for the entirety of the job when you clean things out yourself. With this service you can forego the dumpster and just have the HUNKS come by and get rid of everything. If you are interested in any of these services this link will take you to the junk removal services portion of their website.

Moving

This is my favorite service that is offered. As I mentioned above I absolutely abhor the experience of moving. College Hunks Hauling Junk has the lowest

damage claim rate in the industry according to their website so yo can rest easy knowing that not only do you not have to worry about actually moving, but you also don’t have to worry about your items getting scratched or broken. Another great feature of their services is the “Professional Packing” and more importantly “Unpacking” services. They truly take care of the move from the initial stage to the homey, finished-product. They can also take care of providing moving boxes and package-safety materials. Check out the moving services page for more information.

Commercial Moving

“What about my business, though?” Yeah, don’t worry. They do that too. No

matter the business size or whether you are relocating the company or just want to expand with another branch the HUNKS can help you get all of your equipment and furniture to the new space. The logistics of moving a corporate space can be difficult enough without factoring in the actual move so why not let the HUNKS help?

Your Perfect Pet Sitter

The Search for Quality Pet Care

My friend Michelle was in a quandary.  Her family was driving to west Texas to visit family during the holiday, and she needed someone local to care for her high-maintenance fur baby, Rip.

Rip is not an easy pet.  Old age is his main issue.  He’s prone to getting sick and must be given pet meds and shots.  Michelle has boarded him before, but

they only took him outside twice for bathroom breaks. So, Rip was not happy at the kennel—and honestly…who can blame poor Rip?

Michelle was at her wit’s end.  It’s not easy to find quality pet careEspecially at Christmas!

The Solution: Pet Au Pair Extraordinaire & Petz Pack

I wish I’d known about Pet Au Pair Extraordinaire and Petz Pack when Michelle was asking for referrals back in December.  These two businesses offer the highest standards in pet care.

Pet Au Pair Extraordinaire owner, Carol Ingram, says, “I solve the problem for pet owners who are traveling, who do not want to board their dogs in a facility.” The pet sitter stays in your home and strives to keep the pet’s routine as close to normal as possible.  If the pet generally sleeps with its owner, Pet Au Pair Extraordinaire sleeps with them.  Pet Au Pair plays with the pets and takes them for walks.  “We give them a lot of attention.

Pet Au Pair Extraordinaire can stay over the weekend. They take care of your pets’ special needs. Your Pet Au Pair Extraordinaire sitter can administer meds and give them shots if required. “Probably half of my customers have boarded their dogs in the past, and the problem—whether they’re with a vet or another care—is that sometimes the pets have to have special food. They may have to have meds,” says Carol, adding that sometimes the information doesn’t get passed on to all the kennel staff.

“At least half of my customers have had dogs where they didn’t get fed and they were sick when the owners returned.  We take care for the pets their way the owners would.” Carol has taken care of other animals such as guinea pigs, and once she took care of a attorney’s tarantula!! Pet Au Pair Extraordinaire also sells Paw Tree Nutrition, a wholesome pet food line.

Petz Pack knows that our pets are part of our family. They also know that our

pets have regular routines that can get out of sync when we’re not home. Therefore, they work to keep routines as regular as possible so you can “say goodbye to traditional kenneling forever!”

Rocket City mother, Stephanie L. Robertson, has spent the first part of January helping her family survive the brutal north Alabama winter of 2018.You’ll often find Stephanie braving the elements to gather food at her local Publix.  The winter has been particularly difficult for the animals on their suburban farm—Spike and Snuggles, the family’s black Lab and queenly mutt.  The poor creatures were forced to stay inside and lounge on the sofa as the temperature outside dropped to below 30 degrees. Stephanie maintains a southern lifestyle blog at www.SweetgumLife.com [http://www.sweetgumlife.com/].

Beat the Winter Blahs with Huntsville’s Broadway Theatre League

The Rocket City’s own Broadway Theatre League (BLT) has a long list of premium performances booked for Spring 2018!  Trust Huntsville to schedule a terrific line-up!

The Sound of MusicJanuary 26-28, 2018

The Sound of Music is one of my favorite musicals—So much that I cried when I took the Sound of Music Tour in Austria and the bus driver began playing Climb Ev’ry Mountain on his tape deck.  Not only are the songs memorable, but the plot of the von Trapp family escaping pre-World War II Austria is fantastic.  Rogers and Hammerstein very loosely based their musical on Maria Augusta von Trapp’s autobiography, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers.

The Sound of Music is story of faith, self-discovery, love, and resilience.  It will inspire even your youngest theatre enthusiasts.

Gentlemen’s Guide to Love and MurderMarch 2-4, 2018

Peggy Ann Bakery is one Huntsville’s best kept confectionery secrets.  Peggy Ann Bakery opened in 1953 and has been using quality ingredients to create all kinds of sweet treats for the last sixty five years!

Peggy Ann Bakery provides Rocket City with one of the largest selections of cookies, cakes, cupcakes, bars, brownies, Danishes, petit fors, and more.  Peggy Ann Bakery is sure to have a bakery item perfect for your special occasion.

The bakery offers cakes suited for every occasion. Cakes can be decorated for your holiday, sports team, or children’s birthday theme. It is recommended to order

cakes a week ahead of time to be sure you get on their schedule for your day.   Smaller orders of cookies or Danishes require less advance notice.

One of Rocket City’s favorites at Peggy Ann Bakery is their petit fors.  Their petit fors are great for hosting a wedding or baby shower, or bridal tea.  They can be customized for your event and are a great way to provide small servings of a sweet gourmet treat.

Peggy Ann Bakery is also one of Rocket City’s most sought after wedding cake providers.   If you want Peggy Ann Bakery to provide a large or intricate cake for your upcoming wedding, they suggest reserving your date with them as soon as you have

a wedding date set. Large and intricate cakes require more lead time, and you want to make sure you get scheduled to have one of the best and longest operating quality bakers in Huntsville set to provide the sweets for your big day!

No matter if your event is big or small, or if you need simple pastries or an elaborate wedding cake, Peggy Ann Bakery is sure to be able to provide for your event!
