Hometown Hockey

The TN Valley as a whole has been more aware of hockey as sport over the last year, with the Nashville Predators, making it to the Stanley Cup final. While we have been lured into hockey

at the national level, we would be remiss to not acknowledge the lively, local hockey team, the Huntsville Havoc. The Huntsville Havoc has been a part of the Huntsville community since its inaugural season in 2004. The team has consistently made the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) playoffs in 11 of its 13 year tenure in Huntsville. From its inception the Huntsville Havoc has exceeded the SPHL league average attendance for games and with the increased interest in hockey, this unlikely to change. So, why do more people go to Huntsville Havoc games than other SPHL teams? The Huntsville Havoc provide an exciting live hockey experience that any sports fan will appreciate

The Huntsville Havoc provides a fun, family friendly hockey experience. Every season is packed with lots of fun themed promotions that will keep your family interested in coming back for another dose of fun. This year's theme nights include a new Preds Night to celebrated the Nashville Predators amazing playoff run. Gnash the Predators mascot will join the Havoc mascots Chaos and Ruckus. Each theme night usually includes some type of free giveaway or deal on concessions. Some incentive nights give away replica jerseys, have $2 concessions, or benefit worthy charities. One of my favorite theme nights is the Window World Melissa George Night. That night the Huntsville Havoc deck out in pink, white, and blue jerseys to raise money for the Melissa George Neonatal Memorial Fund, which raise funds for the Huntsville Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. At the end of the game, a charity auction is held where the players auction off their jersey from the game. The team does this type of an auction for different causes several times during the season. Other theme nights scheduled for this year are Super Hero Night, Star Wars Night, and Tacky Christmas Night.

While fun themed nights, do add to the excitement during the game, there is something more special about a Huntsville

Havoc game. When I asked multiyear season ticket holder Lori Coats what her favorite thing about the Havoc was she immediately responded with “I enjoy the energy on the ice that the boys bring when playing for a packed house and the interaction with the fans during jersey auctions.” I can attest that the Huntsville Havoc is an energetic team that loves their fans! This energy and interaction keep Huntsville Havoc fans coming back time after time.

The 2017-2018 season kicks off with a free Meet the Team event on October 24th from 5-7PM. Their first home game will be played on November 3rd at 7PM the Von Braun Center against the Fayetteville Marksmen. The first 2,000 fans in attendance will receive a free magnetic calendar. Adventure in The Rocket City

Between work, getting the kids to school, and all of the craziness that is life It is sometimes difficult to find the time to spend what I refer to as “entertainment time” with the family. Although life makes it challenging to do this, that challenge also makes the time spent with family all the more pleasant. What better way to get the most out of family time than a family adventure?

The Earlyworks Children’s Museum is an interactive museum that allows children to explore not only the museum but also their minds. The entire

museum is an exploration area where kids can touch, climb and play. The museum has interactive history displays where kids can learn about our state’s past and even sign the Alabama Constitution! Children love to hear the museum’s talking tree tell stories, and Biscuit’s Backyard is a Mecca for the preschool crowd.

If you have lived in Huntsville for any amount of time then you have no doubt been to the Space and Rocket Center, but

can you really ever go too many times? USSRC has both permanent exhibits like Rocket Park, Science in Orbit, and Saturn V Hall as well as temporary exhibits. Having both permanent and temporary exhibits ensures that visitors are never disappointed with a visit to the center. This is always a winner with adults and children alike.

If the weather is nice and you would prefer an outside adventure, consider Earlywork’s Constitution Village. The open air museum that is a complete recreation of what life was like in 1819. The museum contains eight buildings; a law

office, a printing shop, a post office, a surveyor’s office, and a woodworker’s shop as well as a personal residence. The museum is idea for anyone interested in history.

5 Unique Huntsville Coffee Shops

Looking for a one-of- a-kind coffee house in the Huntsville area?

Looking for a one-of- a-kind coffee house in the Huntsville area?
Of course, the Tennessee Valley has the typical coffee franchises found in most mid-sized
towns…Which is a good thing. I mean, I enjoy theirs as much as the next guy.
But I’m talking about those unique little hole-in- the-wall places that only the locals know about.
So, just for you guys, I hit what I call the Huntsville Coffee Trail today!
I was surprised by how many of those local coffee shops are available to us. But my biggest
surprise was the diverse vibes I got from visiting each one. It’s like a totally different coffee
culture within a fifteen-mile radius.
In one afternoon, I visited and sampled the best our town had to offer.

My first sample of their coffee was a straight espresso. I’d never had espresso before, so I got quite the jolt when I downed a shot. Next, they offered me a frothy latte with an adorable little cream flower in the center designed by one of the baristas. (Thank you, Ben!)

Angel's Island Coffee

According to their baristas, the idea of Angel’s Island Coffee came about when 16-year- old Angel was living in Fiji with her parents. Her dad struck a deal with the owner for Angel to work there. She worked there without pay (other than an allowance that her dad paid her) and loved the idea of starting her own shop.

Her dream came true in 2007 when she opened Angel’s Island Coffee, named after the beautiful Fiji Islands. Since then they’ve won several local awards, and it’s easy to see why…Their Sunkist is to die for! Made of chocolate, espresso, and ice cream, the Sunkist is chocolate bliss! Not only do they serve coffee, tea, and smoothies, they also have salads, sandwiches, and a kid’s menu.
